Quoteja Hobitista - sohvaperunan muutos

Tänään on J.R.R. Tolkienin 121. syntymäpäivä. Tämän kunniaksi postaan lempiquoteni Hobitti-kirjasta. Ne ovat englanniksi, koska luin kertomuksen viimeksi sillä kielellä ja otin ne ylös siinä yhteydessä.

Ehkä ihan kaikki eivät tiedä, että Tolkien oli kristitty ja C.S. Lewisin, joka oli Narnia-sarjan ja monien muiden hengellisten kirjojen kirjoittaja, ystävä. Itse saan paljon syvällisyyksiä irti sekä Hobitista että Taru sormusten herrasta -teoksesta. Tahdon korostaa, että sovellukseni ovat täysin subjektiivisia, enkä väitä niiden olevan kirjailijan tarkoittamia. Ei juonipaljastuksia.

”There was little grass, and before long there was neither bush nor tree, 
and only broken and blackened stumps to speak of ones long vanished. 
They were come to the Desolation of the Dragon, and they were come at the waning of the year.”

Tässä Bilbo kumppaneineen saapuu lohikäärmeen tuhoamalle alueelle. Tämä sai minut ajattelemaan sitä, että pahin lohikäärme eli sielunvihollinen on tehnyt paljon tuhoa, jota voimme nähdä ympärillämme. Ajankohta oli talvinen ja synkkä loppuvuosi. Kenties me olemme nyt maailman ajan loppupuolella?

"He was trembling with fear, but his little face was set and grim. Already he was a very different hobbit from the one that had run out without a pocket-handkerchief from Bag-End long ago. He had not had a pocket-handkerchief for ages.".

Bilbo kohtaa seikkailun loppuvaiheessa haasteita muuttuneena hobittina. Tässä on kyse siitä, mikä mielestäni on kertomuksen ydin. Mukavuudenhaluisesta kotihiirestä kouliutuu haasteiden kohtaamisen kautta sankari, joka saa maailmassa aikaan muutosta hyvään päin. Siinä tavoitetta meille kaikille, jotka painovoima pyrkii rajoittamaan sohvaperunoiksi.

”It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the
bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterward
were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel
alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait.”

Aijjai, mikä quote. Tämä kolahtaa. Tärkeimmät uskalluksen teot eivät välttämättä ole niitä ilmeisimpiä. Pieni askel eteenpäin pelon ja epäilyksen hetkellä voi olla olennaisempi, kuin se näkyvä teko, joka siitä seuraa.

”It was a terrible battle. The most dreadful of all Bilbo's experiences,
and the one which at the time he hated most, which is to say it was the
one he was most proud of, and most fond of recalling long afterwards,
although he was quite unimportant in it.”

Haastavimmat hetket elämässä voivat olla yksiä tärkeimpiä jälkeenpäin.

Gandalf looked at him. "My dear Bilbo!" he said. "Something is the
matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were."

Tämä quote liittyy teemaan, jonka mainitsin jo aiemmin aran hobitin muutoksesta.

"Then the prophecies of the old songs have turned out to be true,
after a fashion!" said Bilbo.
"Of course!" said Gandalf. "And why should not they prove true?
Surely you don't disbelieve the prophecies, because you had a hand in
bringing them about yourself? You don't really suppose, do you, that all
your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your
sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond
of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!"

Maailmassa tapahtuu asioita, jotka on ennalta mainittu Jumalan sanassa, Raamatussa. On ihmeellistä, että voimme itsekin seurakuntana olla mukana niiden toteuttamisessa. Toiseksi, ne seikkailut, joita Jumalan kanssa saamme käydä, ovat hänen suuremman kätensä ohjaamia hänen hyviä tarkoituksiaan varten.


"You ought not to be rude to an eagle, when you are only the size of
a hobbit, and are up in his eyrie at night!"
